30 YEARS OF COMMUNITY SPIRIT… AND A LEGACY THAT WILL SAVE LIVES

We are blown away by an extremely generous donation from the Holsworthy League of Friends.  We understand that this is a sad time for the League of Friends, the end of an era.  After the final confirmation of closure of the beds at the community hospital their income and activity reduced.

We want to express our extreme gratitude for their support over the last 30+ years and especially now as their community role comes to an end. The effort they have put into fundraising over many years has been amazing and reflects the Holsworthy community spirit.

We will use these funds for the benefit of our communities and for some specific Holsworthy and North Devon initiatives such as expanding our immediate care responders.

We are also passionate about training local people to be able to use life saving defibrillators in their communities empowering them to be confident and step in before medical help arrives.

We are honoured to share this with the North Devon Hospice and will be working together for our communities.

About BASICS Devon -  (British Association for Immediate Care)

BASICS Devon is a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to providing 24/7 pre-hospital emergency care across one of the UK’s most rural counties. We have two priorities – to respond to medical and trauma emergencies, and to provide health education.  Supporting the South Western Ambulance Service, our team of specialist emergency medical volunteers deliver immediate medical care at the scene, ensuring that patients receive expert treatment when every second counts.

Our volunteers operate in their own blue-light equipped vehicles, carrying advanced pain relief, sedative drugs, and the expertise to perform specialist surgical procedures before a patient reaches hospital. In addition, our 4x4 rapid response vehicle enables us to navigate challenging terrain, reaching isolated communities and ensuring that even the most remote areas receive urgent medical care.

Beyond emergency response, we are also passionate and committed to education and training. Through our Community Outreach Programme, we empower individuals with essential lifesaving skills, giving them the confidence to act before professional help arrives. With some Devon residents living over an hour from the nearest hospital, early intervention is often the difference between life and death.  By working in close partnership with local communities, we strive to improve survival rates, reduce long-term disability, and enhance emergency preparedness across Devon. As a volunteer-led charity, we rely entirely on donations to continue our vital work. Your support helps us stay on the road, deliver essential training, and respond whenever and wherever we are needed most.
